Three Little Kittens: If I could put time in a bottle...

I think we've all done it...sat down to take on a task and then something happens...you see an image or memento that gently tugs at your heart. That happened to me today in such a bittersweet way as I was purging some files in my laptop. I found a picture I took nearly a decade ago and time stood still for me, if even just for a little while.

Camille and Rosemary, along with my son's cat, Zoe' (far right) will all turn 8 years old this summer. Now, that's not all that elderly for a cat, but nonetheless, it is eight years and that is a significant amount of time no matter how you count the days, weeks, months and years. In the photo they are about 6 months old. Where did it go? What happened to the three, little kittens that were rescued oh, so long ago? The little kittens that would run willy-nilly from room to room of my house flinging themselves into the air, landing on a dime only to scurry away to begin again? The little kittens who would arch their backs and hop sideways, tail pointing to the clouds as they assaulted an imaginary foe. The time slipped away so quickly.
A litter of kittens that I fostered, 2004

Those of us who cannot imagine living without being surrounded by animals pay a huge price with broken hearts and many tears when there is no more time left and we have to say a painful good-bye to a little life that we've cherished. We moan and we sob and we rail against the fates and our bodies shudder with the pain of unimaginable sorrow.

Scout, 2003, the year he entered my heart

But after a time, we dry our eyes and begin to smile again and begin to plan again - for the new arrival, a new beginning. That little kitten or playful pup or maybe that graying senior in need of a home who caught our eye when we last visited the shelter - and we have a home, we have the room. A home that will open its doors wide to new life and new love and new hope and new smiles. We won't think of a time long into the future where illness will tear us apart, because we have to prepare. We have to turn feathers into monsters for little paws to hunt. Or possibly we need to grab a chubby, little body to run outside so we can say, "Go potty outside", as we stand in the dark hoping the neighbors don't see what we're wearing. We do it all over again without looking back at the pain - the circle of life - and what a life it is for us - the crazy cat people and the wacky dog folks. I can't imagine spending my time any other way - ain't life grand?
Savannah Leigh, 1993 - 2007

I'd like to end this post with the lyrics of an old Jim Croce song, Time in a Bottle. I loved the words in 1972 and I love them even more now. They have a deeper meaning for me now than when I was a kid.

If I could save time in a bottle
The first thing that I'd like to do
Is to save every day
Till Eternity passes away
Just to spend them with you

If I could make days last forever
If words could make wishes come true
I'd save every day like a treasure and then
Again, I would spend them with you

But there never seems to be enough time
To do the things you want to do
Once you find them
I've looked around enough to know
That you're the one I want to go
Through time with

If I had a box just for wishes
And dreams that had never come true
The box would be empty
Except for the memory
Of how they were answered by you

But there never seems to be enough time
To do the things you want to do
Once you find them
I've looked around enough to know
That you're the one I want to go
Through time with

Betcha you can't l♥ve just one, the story of Aurora Katrina

Dis is me, Aurora Katrina, who iz now nine yearz old. Dis iz my baby picky-ture when I came ta live wif my momma in her house. I was da furst kitty-catty dat momma ebber brought into her house. Momma wasn't a "cat purr-son" because she was a "dog purr-son" and ebby 'bean in rescue knewz dat in our town.

On a dark 'n rainy 'n cold day, momma gotz a phone callz dat a widdle kitten was tossed out a car window an' had a gimpy leg (dey flung me by my leg) an' fleas an' wormz an' ear bugs an' it was cold an' rainy outside an' da lady on the talkie phone sayz dat no one else would takez da kitten inta' der house. Not one ta ebber say nos when a little furry waz needin' helpz, momma said she would go an' get da baby kitty an' foster it just for over nightz cuz she said she had doggies an' dat she didn't yike kitties. Momma tooked me ta da dog-tor right away an' gotz all kindz of medicine fur me ta gits better. By da next day I was feelin' so comfy an' purrin' my berry bestest purrs fur momma soz she would see dat I yiked her lotz. I thinkz it worked, too, cuz I nebber left an' momma sayz dat I waz da one dat made magic in her h♥art showin' her dat kittiez was purr-ty special.

Dat was dat back den. I am the one dat made my momma inta' a kitty-catty purr-son frum dat timez on. We still haz da doggies in da house but after me three more kittiez gotz ta move in one-by-one, a widdle yike Noahz Ark. Momma sayz dat 'doptin' me waz da bestest thing ebber an' I sayz dat my momma iz da bestest momma ebber.

L♥ve grows where my Rosemary goes & nobody knows like me

Rosemary JOY 'n her momma, 2001
Effury kitty must haz at least one of dose pickie-tures dat showz dem in not da bestest purr-sible light. Well, taday momma was taking something called a USB upstairs to her office where the PC lives and sucking things into that little white dangle thingie (sure would make a good toy) and den bringin' stuff down here ta da lappie-top so da lappie-top could suck it out.

Well, what-da-ya-know, dere it was, a pickie-ture of my momma kissin' my little white belly when I was still havin' ta live at da shelterz cuz I was only three weekz old and needed momma-cat milk an' couldn't leave yet. Momma would come ta vizit me ebby day. When I would heard her voice, I would stop what I was doin' an' run, run, run ta da front of my cage an' MEOW as biggie as I could soz she'd know I was dere an' all set fur our cuddle time together.

She would come an' git me and sometimez I would ride around in her pocket and sometimes she would carry me in a blankie and sometimes my belly would be stuck to her face and she'd keep sucking on me saying she was kissin' me...really?

I know I might not lookz too happy to youz wif mommaz face stuck on my belly but I really waz because I knew I was one of the chosen kittens. I had a home. It was just a mtter of time. Now dat I'm here...it's da bestest time of all!
